A
local area network (LAN) is a computer network covering a local area,
like a home, office or small group of buildings such as a college and is
useful for sharing files, printers, and services. There are
various types of hardware required to construct a computer network and
you can get everything you need from G&H Computers.
|
Network Interface Cards
These can either be the traditional wired or the new wireless type of
card but the principal remains the same. They are installed in a
computer to give it the capability to connect to a computer network.

Switches
All the computers on a computer
network are connected to a switch. It is the backbone of
the network and allows all the communications between computers
to arrive at their destinations.
|
Routers
A computer network does not
necessarily require a router, however, it is much easier to
setup and maintain and the network is actually faster with one
present. A router can either be connected to a switch or,
what is very common now, have a switch built in.

Wireless Access Points
If you would like to ditch the cables you can setup a wireless network
which works the same as a cabled network. A wireless access point
will allow a computer with a wireless NIC to connect to the network the
access point is connected to. These devices are good for adding
wireless capability to an existing network.

Wireless Routers
What do you get when you cross and
switch, router, and wireless access point? A wireless
router! These are the best for setting up a new network
with wireless capability and for that reason they are the best
selling of all types of network hardware in the home and small
business sector. |
